2008/09Topic: "The Power of Youth"
Eligibility
The contest is open to students under age 19 as of December 31st of the current school year.
2006-07 Hilliard Optimist Club Essay Contest
The topic for this past year was especially difficult, "I Want to Make a Difference Because...".
Each contestant submitted a 500 word or less original essay. The finalists included:
1st Place Chris Mitchell, Darby High School
2nd Place Brianna Lamoso, Darby High School
3rd Place Conor Driscoll, Memorial Middle School
Chris' Essay was submitted for the District competition where he is eligible
to compete for both District and International scholarships. Each winner
received a Medallion and cash prizes (1st - $250; 2nd - $150 and 3rd - $100).

Purpose
This contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people
the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in
which they live. The approach can encompass a young person's personal
experience, the experience of their country or a more historical
perspective. The topic selected each year is intended to give young people
the room to develop their own views around a central idea. In addition
to the opportunity for written expression, participants have the opportunity
to win a college scholarship of up to $5,000! Each year, more than 1,000
Clubs participate in this contest.
